"In some small way... the cultivation of our backyard garden became a point of worship. It drew our minds up to the Lord as the source of all life. Each leaf of lettuce, each chickpea carefully removed from the pod became an incarnate blessing to be enjoyed — a blessing not of our own cultivation, but from Jesus himself. The garden spoke to the goodness of God, and the blessings enjoyed by God’s hands. That humble garden curry of chickpeas and swiss chard became a sacred meal; eaten in thanksgiving and praise.
"These reflections were wonderful… for as long as they lasted. However, as soon as I began to delight in my spiritual simplicity and environmental stewardship, an unsettling question rose in my mind: to what did the backyard garden actually point—spirituality or privilege?"
