I find myself thinking about Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. This is an account we hear again and again. Normally I rush past this scene. I skip ahead to hear the words of institution or the prayer in Gethsemane. Not this year. Instead, I want to rest in that moment. I want to sit in the room when Jesus, despite the dramatic upheaval about to take place, tenderly blesses his friends. With the active betrayal of Judas bearing down upon him, Jesus performs an action designed to open their lives to the redemptive reality around them. If I’m being honest, after all this year has brought us, this is reality to which I would like to be open.
How is Christ’s selfless love perfectly shown in this? More to the point—in a time when our worship necessarily avoids any physical contact with others, is there a way to enter the blessing of the foot-washing? Can I hear the story and feel my own feet washed? For me, three things stand out.
